How to Begin Sewing

Hello Fellow Stitchers!

ree

You found Stitch Yourself, a sewing school, and you are probably wondering how to get started. There are a few things you know to decide how you would like to begin, first for most of the class you will need a sewing machine. Because of this many of our students start by booking a How to Operate Your Sewing Machine class. These are one on one classes where we go over the basics of using your sewing machine. It's great place to start and get to know your teacher.

If you don't have a sewing machine, or are interested in sewing, but just not sure yet, you can take Pattern Literacy. This class does not require a sewing machine and goes over lots of important background information for sewing clothes like: Measuring yourself, fabric weights, how to know how much fabric to buy, and much more! It's a good way to learn a lot about sewing without needing to sewing anything just yet. It will also give the teacher a chance to meet you and talk to you about what your next step might be including options about getting a machine or handsewing.

Another option for a beginning class is How to Sew 1. If you would rather just jump in and start sewing right away, this class is also designed for beginners. During this class we make a Kimono style top (all square pieces) in half size just for practice. This way you can see what it's really like to sew a garment from start to finish. You'll learn about pattern layout, pinning, pressing, simple seam finishing, and even do some hemming. If making a garment sounds overwhelming, this is the perfect class! We break the process down step by step until you have a finished piece. You'll be surprised how easy it is!

If you have some sewing experience, but aren't sure what level you're at within the series of classes there is a description of the skills covered in each class in the Classes tab. If you are still unsure of how to begin with Stitch Yourself, you can always email, call or text and we can talk about what option is the best fit for you, because we are all about learning and expressing ourselves here at Stitch Yourself.
